Myron Edward KELLY - Personal Notes
Myron was born at home, five miles south of Milan, IN, the
youngest of three boys. He attended grade school only a few
hundred yards from his home at what was known as Conn School.
The section of land just east of the home (and school) is called
Conn Loop after the Conn family who lived there many years ago.
I am told they founded the Conn Musical Instrument Co.
After grade school, he attended Dillsboro High School, where he
was president of his senior class. He received a scholarship on
graduation that would have allowed him to attend college for the
sum total of $110 for four years. Considering this was the
depth of the depression, that was an unattainable fortune.
He often credited a traffic ticket for changing his life
forever, and for the good. While "blowing out" a car, he was
spotted by a state policeman who gave him a ticket. The next
day, after paying the fine, he thanked the officer for doing his
duty. This must have impressed the officer, for the next day he
came to speak with dad, offering him a job at a government
construction site. It seems the officer had the job of locating
two men, one each democrat and republican, for work at the
Charleston, Indiana plant that would eventually produce powder
to power the guns of WWII. With dad, he had found his
republican!
He worked there as chief of a dynamite crew, clearing the land,
and as a security guard. During this time, WWII broke out. Dad
received a six-month deferment, which is probably the reason I
am writing this today. During that time, he married Mary
Elizabeth Myers, and one year and two days later, I was born.
His military career was the pride of his life. He distinguished
himself well, reaching the rank of Technical Sergeant in short
order. He was stationed in England, where he repaired and
modified both B-17 and B-24 bombers for the war effort. After
the war in Europe ended, his crew was selected to destroy the
remaining aircraft. He oversaw and participated in the
destruction of about 3200 of the finest aircraft ever built.
His photo record of these events has been published in the
Burtonwood Times, a magazine named for the base where he was
stationed.
While he had countless stories of those times, one bothered him
for many years. Shortly after the end of fighting, pilots and
crews were sent to Switzerland to recover planes that had been
forced to land there (the "forced" part is a matter of some
debate.) Dad prepared two B-24's for the trip, and was asked to
go along. Just before the flight, he was "bumped" from the crew
by a major, for reasons unknown to dad. Of the two planes, one
landed safely, but the other suffered a very hard landing, and
on the attempted go-round, crashed, killing all but two of the
crew.
For over thirty years dad silently wondered if something he had
done could have been in some way responsible for that crash.
The answer came at a get-together of veterans from the field.
It seems that, during the night before the flight, some of the
crew came and drained the aviation gas from the right wing of
the plane, replacing it with auto gas to sell on the black
market in Switzerland. Whether dad was kicked from the crew
because he would have objected (and he would have!) or for other
reasons will never be known, but the die was cast. As the pilot
landed in a deep valley rather than the flat lands of England,
he came in at a quite steep angle and stalled several feet off
the ground. Since they had burned most of the fuel from the left
tanks and none from the right, the plane was out of balance.
With the narrow landing gear of the B-24, it dropped the right
outboard propeller into the pavement, starting the fatal chain
of events. The pilot, mistakenly thinking he could not stop in
time, attempted to go around. He cleared the hangars, but
stalled and crashed.
If it seems strange to have this many details, in the late
1980's, dad learned that Switzerland had filmed all such
landings during and after the war. Both dad and I watched the
B-24 burn, nearly 45 years after the fact. Everything was plain
to see. Except perhaps the car gas in that right wing.
After the war, dad returned to one of the skills he had learned
earlier. He joined Aeronca Aircraft as a welder. Within two
weeks he was promoted to final assembly, a position many had
worked years to attain. When the aircraft market went bust in
1948 or 1949, he moved to National Cash Register. During those
times we lived between Hamilton and Middletown, Ohio. Being the
generous sort, I had given dad the mumps during my first year of
school. Dad had to spend years to totally recover, so when his
father, George Kelly, died, we moved to the farm where he was
born, both to save money and to save the farm from going on the
block. There he was to remain until his death.
31 days after the move, the top half of the house burned. 31
days is important, as the insurance company had given 30 days to
change the name on the policy. Nonetheless, they paid 1/2 what
they would have, and far more than they legally would have had
to pay. The neighbors rebuilt the house, thereby guaranteeing
themselves years of inexpensive welding.
Dad was rightfully known as the best welder in the area. With
portable welding equipment, there are few farms or businesses he
didn't visit. Those he didn't meet that way made there way to
the "shop" when they broke down. This, together with living
almost all his life in the area, made Myron Kelly one of the
most recognized men in Ripley County.
During the 60's, he took another job, this one with Cummins
Engine Co. as a security guard. He was the only guard who
carried a gun. Always very proficient, he felt it prudent, even
though bringing a gun was certain cause for dismissal. It had
to be the poorest kept secret at the company, as he was always
the one called in on drug busts and other dangerous calls. One
time he even gave a gun to the plant manager whose life was
being threatened by an employee. The man said, "As long as I am
here, you will always have a friend at Cummins Engine Company."
His retirement from Cummins brought some return to welding, but
only a few hours a day. He bought wood working equipment and
pursued his love of wood, making clocks and various pieces of
furniture. He spent more time on one of his great loves;
history. He was president of Ripley County Historical Society
for many years, and researched many things, including the
Versailles hangings. He was the first to chronicle those events
with some accuracy. What he perhaps considered his greatest
achievement, at least in the later half of his life, was the
restoration of Old Washington Cemetery. This was done when he
was in his late seventies and even into his 80th year. Sadly,
it has fallen into disrepair.
He was always active in the church. A life-long member of
Washington Baptist Church, he was Chairman of the Deacons when
the church was taken over by another denomination. He was
thrown out. This was one of the all-time low points of his
life, yet it lead him to Versailles Baptist Church, to which he
was later to say that he should have gone years earlier. He was
president of the Laughery Valley Baptist Men's Fellowship for
many years, taking the organization from very small to being a
sizable, active organization.
The events surrounding a person's life can only give some
indication of the character of that person. Some of his talents
we have glossed over include: Photographer, writer, farmer, gas
truck driver, salesman, lecturer and gardener. Passions that
drove him include: Boxer dogs, the pond he built, wild flowers,
hunting with a good rifle and travel. He didn't enjoy debate or
discussion, yet he could state a position with the best of them.
He was rather quiet about his inward thoughts, but they stood
out as if he shouted them from the hill tops. He loved his
family and respected his friends. They did the same.
Such was the character of Myron Kelly.

Robert Edward KELLY - Personal Notes
Writing about ones self is perhaps harder than writing about
ones family. It is difficult to be objective, and there are
so many details to sort through. Anyway, here goes.
I was born 30 Mar, 1943 in Milan, IN, the only child of
Myron E. and Mary Myers Kelly. WWII saw that I was raised my
my mother and paternal grandparents for the first three
years. I grew up in the same house as my father, about five
miles south of Milan.
School came relatively easy, at least until college. I
spent first grade near Hamilton, OH and went to second grade
in a one room schoolhouse in Elrod, IN, having moved back to
the "farm" at age seven. From third grade until high school
graduation, I attended Milan schools. Milan was the
smallest school to ever win the H. S. basketball state
championship, during 1954. This was an event only slightly
more significant than V.E. day or perhaps the fall of Rome.
That single event has played a part in the lives of all the
residents, and will probably do so until we die.
I never considered myself particularly popular in school,
perhaps because I wasn't. The only area I stood out in was
academics, and that only became importaant later in life. I
played in the Band and sang, was on the Student Council, and
graduated well up in the class. I earned the respect of
most all of my classmates.
Those years were interesting. We had little money. During
most of the 50's, dad couldn't afford a car, having to
travel everywhere in the pickup he used for his welding
business. I remember one time when he took me to school in
the old '52 Studebaker, and the seat of my pants rotted
aaway later in the day due to the battery acid that was on
the seat.
I was a good hunter and outdoors person. Quite a few times
I would leave a gun in the office of the school until the
end of class so that I could get an early start in rabbit
hunting. They never seemed to care, even when it was my
trusty .22 High Standard pistol. Dad had taught me to shoot
it by the age of six. I stayed in practice for many years,
even considering trying out for the 1980 Olympics.
During high school, I worked at the Milan Furniture Mfg Co.
during the summer of 1959 and as gravel inspector on a dredge
on the Ohio River in 1960. $1.60/hr was BIG MONEY! I saved
enough to fund most of my Freshman year at Purdue.
At Purdue, I had to study for the first time in my life. It
wasn't particularily fun, and it became very clear the
engineering wasn't going to be my life. I dropped out after
three semesters.
At age 22 I was employeed at Cummins Engine Co., and ran a
photography business on the side. One day, while on the
phone with my feet up, an Air Force recruiter came in to
tell me that my medical classification had changed. Seems
that flat feet were no longer reason for missing the fun of
service.
