Missionaries and Stories from the Field

Ghana trip report, June & July, 1996

I spent from June 25 through July 14 in Ghana, West Africa. For those of you who have followed this page, you will know this is my second trip there, the first with my wife in 1992. Things have improved there in many ways, both spiritually and physically.

Most of my time was spent working with Ghana Christian College and Seminary, a non-denominational school offering certificate, diploma, and degree programs. I came away very impressed with the level of dedication and instructional attainment of both the students and instructors. It is a good school.

They had called me to come there because they are in the process of building a new campus. The old campus in a poorer residential part of Accra is stretched far past its limits. Students are housed six to the room (and small rooms at that,) and everything is called on to do double duty. The student load is beyond what GCC should have, and more students are wanting in.

They have 33 acres about 10 miles outside Accra that is being developed into what will be a modern campus. The site is nearly square and a circular road is already in place. The plans are already drawn.

Building everything will take money. We hope the videos we will produce for this project will raise much of the 1 1/2 million dollars needed. Time will tell. If you are interested in Christian Education, this project could be for you.

I was able to go north for a few days, into the Nkwanta Region. My wife and I have supported an evangelist there for about three years. His work is amazing. He has helped expand the church in his village of Obanda, and helped found churches in three other villages. It is hard to believe how well these men have used so little money to such advantage for the Lord!

If you would like to be involved with this area, I have names of seven people wanting pen pals from the US. They are all Christians, and all but two are adults. I guarantee you would be uplifted by their letters!

I have names of three ministers needing support to continue their spread of the gospel. Either $50 or $100 per month would be a great help. Each needs $100 to both live and carry out a ministry without outside work. I can send names and details, and you could wire money directly, or through an agency that does this sort of thing. This is a great project for a Sunday School class!

The Obanda church has built a new building, and they need to concrete the floor and plaster the walls (it is made of mud brick.) They need about $500 to finish. It could be a fine one-time project, and any amount would help.

I am sorry to say not everything was perfect. Not all missionaries cooperate with one another. I saw areas where personalities didn't allow as much to happen as the Lord would have liked. I have seen this before. It saddens me when I see equally dedicated people quibble over details and miss the whole point; there are souls to save out there. Enough said.

Personal details of the trip are perhaps unimportant, but I must say I was surprised at the weather! It was cooler than here in Indiana. This was the rainy season, and my last trip was in April, one of the hottest times of the year. Things were much greener and sleeping was much easier. As always, accommodations were the best available. Both missionaries and the local people make it a point to treat you very well, whether that is a room and bath, or a cot and a bucket of water to bathe in. I think I may have gained a couple of pounds on the good food, too!

Everyone should have an area of the world that is special to them. Ghana is that place for us. MMPI will continue to bring you stories and video of places you may not get to visit as long as the Lord allows. We plan a video about the churches and services of the area soon. I will probably ask a little more for it than the $3.00 we ask for videos of specific missionaries. We are doing that to cover our production costs, as no missionary contributed anything to its production. I will announce it here, hopefully by late August.
